We grill The Squirrel Sisters on their beauty routine in our series CB (Clean Beauty) Selfie. Read on to hear them bare all on their bathroom shelf and find out what makes it into their selfie…

Tell us a little bit about you and what you do…

We are the Squirrel Sisters (Gracie & Sophie) and we are actually sisters. Squirrel Sisters is a health and wellness brand that is all about making ‘being healthy’ fun and achievable; proving that you don’t have to make sacrifices to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our slogan is ‘Treat Your Health’.

We have a range of 100% natural raw, gluten-free, dairy-free and no added sugar energy bars, which hit the market a year ago and are now available in over 500 stores in the UK and lots abroad too.

We recently won recognition for our bars by major British high street retailer Boots, launching into 250 stores. Having had no investment so far and still being a very small team, this kind of recognition really is a game changer for our brand, which literally started in the family kitchen, to bridge the gap between tasteless healthy snacks and delicious treats.

What one question do you get asked the most in your job (and can we have the answer please)?

How are your bars different to others?

What a lot of people don’t realise is that a lot of the products that claim to be healthy are actually full of crap; using ingredients like syrups, pastes, concentrated fruit juices, which in some cases are actually worse than normal refined sugar. We only use the highest quality whole ingredients to make our bars and they are gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free, sugar-free and suitable for people following a vegan and paleo lifestyle. They are also raw so all the nutritional benefits of the ingredients are still in tact and they taste delicious J The 40g bar is split into two 20g sticks (2x 20g per pack) because we know how important portion control is to the consumer and we also want to encourage sharing! They can be eaten any time of the day; pre/post workout, for breakfast, the snack between meals, after dinner as a healthy pudding- they are the perfect guilt-free treat!

What gets you out of bed in the mornings?

Other than our alarm… the thought of a warm cup of tea and a lovely breakfast makes getting out of bed that much easier.

The best thing about being a woman in your industry?

The best thing has to be the fantastic support and community women have created. Our industry is all about encouraging each other and joining forces, supporting and empowering each to have strength to be the best we can be. It’s all about ‘girl power’ and we do as much as we can to support this.

Now onto your selfie…Why did these products make your bathroom selfie?

Gracie: Kiehl’s avocado eye cream- I have been loving this product for quite some time now, it is so thick and creamy and amazing if you have dry skin around your eyes.

Sophie: Coffee scrub- I’ve been exfoliating a lot more in the lead up to my wedding to try and make it glow more and this is the product I’ve been using because I really like the way it makes me feel. It makes me feel really healthy and makes my skin soft and bright.

Tell us a bit about your daily beauty routine…

Gracie: I tend to wash my face with a cleanser (currently mixing it up between Emma Hardie’s Moringa cleansing balm and Origins GinZing refreshing scrub cleanser). After this I use a toner (currently using Kiehl’s calendula herbal extract toner) and then apply and oil or moisturiser (currently using Trilogy organic rose hip oil and Kiehl’s ultra facial cream).

Sophie: I Wash my face (using Origins mega bright skin illuminating cleaner) then appy and oil or moisturiser (also using Trilogy organic rose hip oil and Kiehl’s ultra facial cream or Origins GinZing energy boosting moisturiser)

Do you think natural beauty is important and why?

It’s so important. We are very conscious about what we put INTO our bodies (the saying ‘you are what you eat’ resonates strongly with us) and totally believe that what you put ON your body is just as important… your skin is like a sponge so feed it well.

Any beauty secrets you think the world should know about?

Our lovely friend Lou (who is a make-up artist) recently recommended rose hip oi, which we apply before applying our normal moisturiser. It really helps to rehydrate the skin.

What’s your inside out beauty tip? (i.e what do/don’t you eat/drink for great skin and hair?)

Gracie: I love baobab powder from Aduna. It’s really high in vitamin C, which is amazing for the skin and it really helps if you’re feeling run down.

Sophie: Water and herbal teas (especially hormone balancing ones like liquorice)

What’s your going “out out” beauty look?

We both go for a similar look on occasions when we are going ‘out out’ ;). We both love a dark eye- bronze/brown eye shadows with a black eyeliner and we love a good bronzer for contouring.

Matte or gloss?

Powder finish or dewy glow?

Dewy glow (unless it’s a hot day when it can end up looking like a sweaty glow)

Smokey eye or statement lip?

Smokey eye

And finally, if you could choose anyone in the world, whose bathroom shelfie would you most like to see?

Oooo there would be many but J.Lo (Jennifer Lopez) would be an interesting one. She looks incredible for her age; her skin is amazing and she glows so we would love to know what products she uses.
