WASTE AT CHRISTMAS – DO YOU CARE?

by

We’re no doubt all geared up to get some Christmas shopping done in the next few days amidst the Black Friday madness, but whilst you add your gift sets to cart, are you thinking about what this time of year means for our environment?

🎅🏼According to a 2017 study, Brits will chuck out 108 million rolls of wrapping paper, 40 million rolls of sticky tape and almost 100 million black bags full of packaging from gifts. Yikes.
☃️Whether wrapping paper is even recyclable is a murky area; anything with glitter, foil or plastic coating won’t be recyclable. Ensuring that the paper you buy is, well, actually pure paper is the key. If you’re unsure, do the scrunch test – try to scrunch up the paper into a ball. If it scrunches, and stays scrunched, it can probably be recycled.
🎄You only need to turn to the aisles of the big retailers here in the UK or watch an xmas unboxing video on Insta to see the sheer amount pre-packaged gift sets on the market – most excessively packed in cardboard or plastic and often totally disproportionate in size to the actual product they’re housing. If it’s then ordered online that’s another mailer box to add to the mix…
❄️And don’t even get us started on beauty advent calendars…literally like WTF??!! Why do we need 24 individually wrapped mini beauty products in 24 individual windows in 1 giant glittery cardboard Xmas tree that we’re JUST GOING TO THROW IN THE BIN FFS?
⭐️The above study also cited that 6 in 10 of us don’t feel guilty about the amount of waste that hits landfill over the festive period. But that was 2017, do we think that, with the rise in environmental awareness that we’ve seen over the past year or so, attitudes will change?
🎁What are you doing to reduce your waste this Christmas? We’ve spoken a lot before about what we do to push for environmental responsibility with choices we make for @bybibeauty. Watch this space tomorrow…
